Sephora recently uploaded an online tutorial entitled “Grunge Lipstick is #TrendingatSephora”. A lovely Sephora make up artist runs through a few excellent products that will help you obtain a sexy dark lipstick look best paired with a cute Angela Chase inspired plaid dress and a pair of legendary Dr. Martens. I was once a huge fan of this look – my 1995 go-to lip colour is still available today – and likely a cheaper option for those who want to try this look without investing too much cash. One of the best things about this look is that you can tailor it to your personal style and/or occasion – if you want a lighter look, use a lipstick with more red and a lighter liner underneath – if you like a really dark lip, use black underneath and a darker lip colour on top – be creative and play with products you already own!
First, I highly recommend watching the Sephora tutorial for a few fabulous recommendations that you can find online or at a Sephora location. For the full list of products suggested in this tutorial please scroll to the end of this post!
Second, if you are really interested in this look and would like to achieve it for a lower price point (ie. drug store), here are a few suggestions from my high school BFF and I – straight out of 1995 – from our locker to yours (of course we shared a locker – because best friends)!
1990’s Vamp Lip (Inexpensive)
You will need…
- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick – Black Berry 640 (Matte) – or another like shade (burgundy, cranberry, merlot)
- Black or Dark Brown eyeliner/lip liner
- Clear lip balm or Vaseline
First be sure that your lips are not dry or cracked – exfoliate and moisturize if you have to. Side note – if you generally take care of your lips you will always be able to ensure that any lipstick application is smooth and even. Second, line your lips with the eyeliner/lip liner – just like in the Sephora tutorial, you will want to begin in the centre and you will want to fill the entire lip. Third, generously apply lipstick over the liner, there are other shades available that will be a close match for the recommended Revlon shade – be sure to select something that resembles the colour of a dark glass of red wine. Finally, after blotting, add a little balm or Vaseline to ensure your lips are not too dry from the application of the liner and matte lipstick. Voila – ready for a date with Lestat de Lioncourt.
