Born in Stockholm, the Miike Snow brainchild is a combination of the many talents of three artists: two Sweedish natives Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg (also known as Bloodsy and Avant) and one American, Andrew Wyatt. “High” and “profile” are very familiar words for Karlsson and Winnberg who are known for their work with pop stars such as Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez. Wyatt, who grew up in New York, is likewise no stranger to working with popular artists. Wyatt has worked with Bruno Mars (he was a co-writer on Mars’ hit song Grenade), as well as the ever-popular DJ Mark Ronson. As a group, Miike Snow have worked with Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon, Passion Pit and Vampire Weekend. Suffice it to say, all members of Miike Snow have the resume and requisite “ear-worm cred” to support a closer look at their latest album.
The trio has been working together for years and the Bloodsy/Avant duo even longer. Miike Snow’s eponymous debut album was released in 2009 and a follow up album, Happy to You, was released in 2012. The album iii is naturally the band’s third studio album. The music is an odd collection of songs with a little bit of something that should appeal to many musical tastes – likely due to the varied backgrounds of Karlsson, Winnberg and Wyatt. The album was officially available in March of 2016 and three of its singles (and a couple of highly entertaining music videos) have been released to date.
A magical melange of musical genres and influences work together to create the Miike Snow listening experience. The first two singles, Heart is Full and the ridiculously catchy Genghis Khan were released late last year (a spot-on analogy for boorish behaviour that would have made a great punchline for a Snickers advertisement). The album’s third single, The Heart of Me, was released in 2016. Over and Over and Back of the Car are among the many standout tracks from the album that have not been released as singles yet.
Miike Snow’s latest album could easily become the soundtrack emanating from your earbuds while you bounce around the city on a carefree sunny day this summer. Furthermore – if you enjoy a little EDM/alternative cross-pollination in your playlist – Miike Snow’s iii is definitely for you.
